Public Hearing Recap: A Powerful Showing of Support for the MN EMS Memorial

On July 16, the Minnesota State EMS Line of Duty Death Memorial Foundation presented its proposal before the Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board (CAAPB) during a scheduled public hearing. What followed was a remarkable display of support from the EMS community and its allies.

Nearly 50 individuals attended in person or joined virtually—an extraordinary turnout for a CAAPB hearing, where typical attendance ranges from 5 to 7 people. The board expressed clear surprise at the volume and sincerity of those who showed up to speak on behalf of the memorial. The testimony delivered was emotional, respectful, and deeply compelling.

We are grateful beyond words for the support shown. Your presence sent a strong and unified message: Minnesota’s EMS professionals deserve to be recognized alongside law enforcement and fire services on the Capitol grounds.

What’s next?
The CAAPB has not yet set a date for the official vote. If the board votes in favor of the project, it will move into the next phase, which includes land selection and site studies. Until then, we will continue to push the project forward through outreach, education, and fundraising.

We still have a long way to go—but this week was a turning point. Thank you to everyone who stood with us. Your voice made a difference.
